O Seattle Storm conquistou a edição deste ano da WNBA ao bater o Las Vegas Aces nessa terça-feira (6), por 92 a 59, e fechar a série final com uma “varrida”, por 3 a 0. Foi o quarto troféu conquistado pela franquia na história, sendo o segundo em três anos (venceu também em 2018). Com bons resultados e solidez, a equipe mantém a cidade mais populosa do estado de Washington no mapa do basquete estadunidense e mundial.

A cidade de Seattle ficou estremecida em 2008, quando a franquia de basquete masculino, o Seattle SuperSonics, foi vendida para investidores de Oklahoma e virou o Oklahoma City Thunder, também com cores e localidade diferentes da original. O Sonics, que figurava na NBA desde 1967, deixou de existir e tem somente breves menções no Thunder. Parte da torcida segue fiel e aguarda a volta do Sonics.
O Storm quase foi vendido junto do Sonics para o grupo de Oklahoma, mas a negociação não foi concretizada. Apesar disso, o então dono das duas franquias, Howard Schultz, vendeu o Storm para outros investidores, que permaneceram com a equipe na cidade e não mudaram nada relacionado à identidade. O Storm foi fundado em 2000 por Schultz e permanece com a mesma caracterização desde então.
A cidade de Seattle vivencia o esporte, e a falta de uma equipe masculina de basquete, além de impulsionar o Storm, fomenta outras modalidades. É o caso do futebol americano, com o Seattle Seahawks, do futebol, com Seattle Sounder, do beisebol, com o Seattle Mariners, e do hóquei no gelo, com o Seattle Kraken.
A temporada 2020 da WNBA, disputada em formato de “bolha” de isolamento em Bradenton, cidade da Flórida, devido à pandemia do novo coronavírus, foi reduzida e disputada de julho a outubro. O Storm foi o segundo colocado na temporada regular e eliminou o Minnesota Lynx nas semifinais até bater o Aces na decisão. A ala Breanna Stewart, do Storm, foi eleita a melhor jogadora das finais.
A franquia conquistou a WNBA também em 2004, 2010 e 2018. Junto de Lynx e do Houston Comets, que teve as operações encerradas em 2008, o Storm tem o maior número de títulos da liga.
